The Content of Fall-out Strontium-90 in Korean Teeth

Abstract
The author calculated the content of fall-out Strontium-90((90)^Sr) in Korean teeth. In the view of its influences on the body, (90)^Sr is one of the representative radioactive substance among the fission products through the nuclear weapon test. (90)^Sr distributes in the living tissue as calcium, especially in teeth and bone. As that does not readily exchange in teeth, the calculation of its content in teeth will be most resemble record about the body burden (90)^Sr uptaken while calcifying stage. For this study, the author collected permanent central incisors, lateral incisors, and first molars of the dwellers around Seoul district born in 1908 through 1959, and the deciduous teeth in 1954 through 1961.
The author made ash from these teeth. Strontium carrier was added to the ash and (90)^Sr was seperated from calcium by the precipitation method with fuming nitric acid. After (90)^Sr was purified, Yttrium carrier was added. After Yttrium-90 was yielded and the decay equilibrium was made, it was counted by the Low Background Beta Counter and Calculated in Picocurie (90)^Sr/gram-calcium.
The results are as followings;
1. The content of (90)^Sr in permanent teeth born in 1908 through1940 was below 1.0 pCi/g-Ca while this content increased a lot to 2.17 in 1947 through 1950 and reached 4.3 in 1958 through 1959.
2. In the case of deciduous teeth, its content was 1.29 pCi/g-Ca in 1954 through 1956, 2.18 in 1958, 5.81 in 1959, 6.03 in 1960 and 9.93 in 1961.
3. The contents of (90)^Sr in deciduous and permanent teeth increased more and more in younger generation. As described above, this increasing pattern could be continued untill 1964 when the nuclear weapon test was peak, so that further calculation of the content in deciduous teeth of children¢¥s born after 1960 will be needed.
